User Management and Moderation

Webulator allows the site owner to create and manage accounts for users of the site, assigning permissions for the users to allow them to create and moderate articles and to access the site administration section to edit the look and feel of the website.

Users

There are a number of user types available:

Site Owner
The Site Owner has full permission to add and edit articles on the website, to manage the styling of the website and to create and edit user accounts (including site administrators).
Site Admin
Site Admins has full permission to add and edit articles on the website, to manage the styling of the website and to create and edit user accounts (limited to moderators and contributors).
Moderator
Moderators have full permission to add and edit articles on the website and to moderate articles submitted by contributors.
Contributor
Contributors may add articles to the website and edit their own articles, but their work will not be publicly shown on the website until approved by a moderator or administrator.
Reader
A Reader can only read articles. This user type is useful if you want to have articles that are visible only to a particular group of logged in users. For example, a school may want to have articles just for staff members, in which case it could create a group called "staff" and add each staff member as a Reader and make them a member of the "staff" group. Any articles marked as visible to the "staff" group and not marked as "public" will only be able to be seen by logged in staff members.
Reader (locked)
This is a more restricted version of the Reader type above. When logged in, a locked reader does not have access to the "Edit Profile" page and so cannot change any of the user details. This is useful for situations where you want a general purpose user for many people to access private content.

Logged in users who do not have access to the user management system are still able to access their own profile - for example to change their password or email address.

Moderation

Articles do not become publicly visible until they have been validated by a moderator. Users with moderator permissions are able to moderate their own articles, but for ordinary contributors, their articles have to be validated by a moderator before anyone else is able to see them.

When a contributor submits an article, an email is automatically sent to the main site moderator to alert them. The moderator can then follow a link in the email message which takes them straight to the article requiring validation. After checking that the article is ok, they can validate the article, and (optionally) an email is sent automatically back to the contributor to tell them that their article is now live on the site.
