As well as searching for text, visitors can restrict their searches to particular sections of the site and publication date ranges.

Surrounding a search phrase in double quotes causes the search engine to look for that complete phrase. A search for "web server" will return articles containing that phrase, whereas a search for web server will return articles containing either word.

The + operator can be used to make a search term mandatory. Thus a search for web +server will return all articles containing the word server, and (optionally) web.

The - operator can be used to exclude a search term. Thus a search for web -server will return all articles containing the word web which do not contain the word server.

The * operator can be used as a wildcard to search for words beginning with a particular pattern. Thus a search for serv* will return articles containing the words server, service, servitude and so on.
